April 15 marks the first day of a three-week long saga that is the Cancun Bubble, with back-to-back-to-back tournaments that will likely decide who’s going to the Olympic Games and who is not.
Volleyball World is streaming all of the matches, including the country quota! If you’re ever wondering where you can find the matches from Cancun, this is your page. We’ll have daily updates, and streams for the country quota, qualifier, main draw and medal rounds all posted here.
Cancun main draw
Tri Bourne and Trevor Crabb vs. David Schweiner and Ondrej Perusic
Kelley Kolinske and Emily Stockman vs. Nadezda Makroguzova and Svetlana Kholomina
Kelley Kolinske and Emily Stockman vs. Yurika Sakaguchi and Chiyo Suzuki
Cancun Qualifier
What is technically the first day of the Cancun Bubble — country quotas are not included in competition days — features one less team than expected — but in a good way. After Casey Patterson and Chase Budinger pulled out of the country quota due to a light knee injury, Tri Bourne and Trevor Crabb jumped out of the quota and into the qualifier as the one seed. Then, after watching Chaim Schalk and Theo Brunner beat Miles Evans and Bill Kolinske, 21-19, 21-18, in the country quota, Bourne and Crabb received another gift.
Dutch blocker Christiaan Varenhorst dropped out with a calf injury, bumping Bourne and Crabb directly into the main draw.
It makes qualifier day in Cancun a two-team affair: Schalk and Brunner will see the Swedish Jump Setters, David Ahman and Jonatan Hellvig, the darlings of Doha. Should they win, they’ll meet Chileans Marco and Esteban Grimalt for a berth into main draw.
On the women’s end, it is only Sarah Sponcil and Kelly Claes. They begin with the host country, Esperanza Castro and Atenas Guzman. The winner will meet the victor of Brazil and Finland.
Below are the streams for Friday’s qualifier.
Cancun women’s country quota
Kelly Reeves and Terese Cannon will play first, vs. Sara Hughes and Emily Day
The winner will play Chasing Gold athletes Sarah Sponcil and Kelly Claes for a berth into the qualifier.
Cancun men’s country quota
Because Casey Patterson and Chase Budinger dropped out, Chasing Gold athletes Tri Bourne and Trevor Crabb will not have to compete in the country quota. The only American match is Chaim Schalk and Theo Brunner vs. Chasing Gold athlete Bill Kolinske and Miles Evans.
